Modern architecture is a term for the group of styles from the first half of the 20th century. This trend was more important after World War II where modern buildings are characterized by the use of new construction materials and technologies, especially glass and steel and reinforced concrete. This architecture wants to flee from the Neoclassic tendency that had predominated until that moment.
One of the most famous modern architects was Antoni Gaudi. He was the most important figure of Catalan modernism, although its style was different from the rest of the modernist buildings. His architecture is characterized by the undulating lines, an organic and naturalistic style, in which he uses its famous trencadis (mosaics made with small irregular ceramic pieces). Some of his most recognized works are the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batllo, Casa Mila, Casa Vicens or Park Guell.
The most important figure in the rise of modernism in France was Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, who took the name of Le Corbusier in 1920. The works of Le Corbusier always have some characteristics. The first is the use of pillars or columns, on which the house is suspended. The longitudinal window is also common in his spaces, as is the facade and open-plan. Also, the garden terrace works to give harmony to the architectural complex. In his designs he gives much importance to the functionality. Two of its most famous buildings are the Villa Savoye and The Villa La Roche-Jeanerette, which is now the Fondation Le Corbusier.
The American architect Frank Lloyd Wright was a personage known worldwide, not only for his designs, but also for a colorful sentimental life. He was also an interior designer, educator and writer. He made more than 1000 designs, and 532 were carried out. He was the leader of the Prairie School, an architectural movement in which he also developed his vision of urban planning. Especially, he is known for his houses, although he also designed offices, skyscrapers, hotels and other buildings. The most famous construction of the architect is the Fallingwater house, in which he captures all his organic ideas. This building has been called the best architectural work of all time.
