Photographer Lori Nix uses dioramas to capture reality

In her series “The City,” photographer Lori Nix uses her skills as both an artist and photographer to capture constructed landscapes that evoke a surreality not actually existing in nature. Although they appear as if they are a piece of reality, they are created from her own visions.

Nix received her undergraduate degrees in both photography and ceramics and enjoys using her hands to create and the camera to capture. She decided to form such scenes from dioramas, which she makes about three per year. Each scene is carefully constructed to allow the viewer to question their place in the world and their impact on the planet. She intends for the viewer to think about their actions and how they effect the world around them.

Nix’s photographs find a balance between the read and the surreal leaves us wanting more.
