As autumn begins, galleries in London start to put out their best shows – oftentimes saving them for the colder months. With London being home to some of the world’s most famous galleries and museums – such as the Tate and National Gallery, to name a few, the art experts behind IBA – The International Body of Art, an arts company which gives a platform to underrepresented artists, urge Londoners to support smaller galleries this autumn. These institutions often put on thought-provoking exhibitions that highlight the true vitality of the city’s arts scene. Below they’ve outlined four of the small galleries on their radar:
1. Arcadia Missa
Founded in Peckham in 2015, the site has now moved central, to Soho and focuses on presenting contemporary art with intent. It is known as the go-to place for art that engages with digital culture, and champions collaboration and conversation between its artists and audiences.
2. GX Gallery
Located in Camberwell, GX Gallery is an eclectic gallery that aims to support both established and emerging artists, from Hideyuki Sobue, Vaughan Grylls and Holly Rees. They exhibit artists’ work from a multitude of backgrounds, styles and experiences. This local venture hosts a regular programme of commercial solo and group exhibitions. They also exhibit work in a number of local and regional art fairs throughout the year.
3. The Flood Gallery
Showcasing photography of famous performances from the likes of The Beatles and Queen, The Flood Gallery is a perfect day out for music lovers, all in the heart of Greenwich Market.
4. Studio 73
Set in the heart of Brixton Village, this space is a quaint gallery and framing shop. They showcase local artists with rolling exhibitions of original paintings, drawings, photography and editioned prints. They have a rotating roster of artists showcasing their work here on a regular basis and has quickly established itself as a local favourite.
CEO of International Body of Art, Maria Artool and Project Manager, April Kelly are available to speak about any of the following topics:
The need for more representation in the art world
The barriers to entry for art world professionals and practicing artists
Democratising the inner workings of the art world
About IBA
International Body of Art is a contemporary arts company working to create a more inclusive and accessible art world, for both artists and their audience. From helping artists acquire funding to exhibiting their realised projects in art shows around London, IBA supports emerging artists through every step of their development. In turn, the company allows art enthusiasts to engage with the most exciting artists from around the world – artists that they may have otherwise never had a chance to engage with.
At its core, IBA believes that anybody should be able to create, access and share art. They advocate for an art world that challenges borders and boundaries, an art world that exists beyond the white cube.
