Bacchanalia Returns: A Theatrical Descent Into Madness at Hoxton Hall

Sleepwalk Immersive is bringing back the twice sold-out hit Bacchanalia for a highly anticipated four-week run in March 2025. Named one of The Stage’s Top 50 Shows of 2023, this immersive adaptation of The Bacchae promises a whirlwind of hedonism, madness, and theatrical brilliance inside Hoxton Hall’s stunning Grade II* listed building.

From March 11 to April 6, audiences will step into a world where ancient tragedy meets 1960s counterculture, following characters through the chaos of Thebes as Dionysus, the god of wine and pleasure, shakes the city to its core. Limited tickets are now available for this unmissable journey through dance, spoken word, puppetry, and immersive storytelling.

A World of Immersive Theatre Awaits

Forget sitting politely in a darkened theatre. Bacchanalia invites audiences to explore a multi-storey set, move freely through different rooms, and choose their own path through the story. This isn’t just watching theatre—it’s stepping inside it.

In immersive theatre, there are no passive spectators. Every visit offers a unique experience, as audiences follow different characters, stumble upon secret moments, and witness events unfold from various perspectives. Bacchanalia takes this concept to its fullest, allowing guests to weave their own journey through the madness and revelry of Dionysus’ world.

A 1960s Reimagining of a Greek Classic

Euripides’ The Bacchae is a tale of divine power, rebellion, and the thin line between ecstasy and destruction. Sleepwalk Immersive’s Bacchanalia reinterprets this ancient tragedy with a 1960s twist, setting the drama against the backdrop of a countercultural revolution.

Across four floors of meticulously designed spaces, audiences will encounter:

Dionysus, the god of revelry, luring followers into his intoxicating world.

Pentheus, the rigid mayor of Thebes, determined to resist the chaos.

A city unraveling, where order collapses and pleasure takes control.

This isn’t just theatre—it’s a deep dive into the primal forces of human nature, expressed through a seamless blend of contemporary dance, physical theatre, and evocative visuals.

Meet the Cast Shaping Thebes’ Fate

The show features a mix of immersive theatre veterans and exciting new talent, each bringing a unique intensity to the performance. Whether through movement, dialogue, or silent glances exchanged in dimly lit corridors, every actor plays a part in pulling audiences deeper into Dionysian delirium.

Expect powerhouse performances, haunting encounters, and unexpected twists in a production that keeps audiences engaged at every turn.

Book Your Place in Thebes

Bacchanalia runs from March 11 to April 6, 2025, at Hoxton Hall. Evening performances begin at 7:30 pm, with additional matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm.
