Voodoo Ray’s, the New York-style pizza restaurant on Kingsland High Street in Dalston, has a new owner after the company that ran it went into creditors’ voluntary liquidation this month.
Rebecca Lines, who has worked at Voodoo Ray’s for several years, has taken ownership of the business, Restaurant Online reported on 29 October. She plans to keep it independent and to build up its catering, large-order and private events trade.
“Voodoo Ray’s is a huge part of what made me fall in love with East London,” Lines told the trade title. “Having worked here for years, when the business faced an uncertain future, I couldn’t bear the thought of losing another institution that makes this part of London so special.”
“It’s about protecting its personality, keeping it independent and making sure it’s still part of Dalston for years to come,” she said.
The liquidation
Voodoo Ray’s Limited passed a resolution to wind up on 15 October and appointed Gary Steven Pettit of PBC Business Recovery & Insolvency as liquidator the same day. Notices in The London Gazette on 21 October give the company’s trading address as 95 Kingsland High Street.
The restaurant opened there in 2012. It was started by the DJ and nightlife operator Dan Beaumont and named after Voodoo Ray, A Guy Called Gerald’s 1988 acid house record. It is known for 22-inch pizzas sold whole or by the slice, frozen margaritas and late opening.
The brand had four sites at its peak in the mid-2010s, including food hall counters and a restaurant in Peckham. Dalston is the only one left.
Doña downstairs
The first collaboration under Lines is with Doña, the agave cocktail bar that closed its Stoke Newington site in September. It now runs weekend nights in the basement under the restaurant, the space that was once the Dance Tunnel club and later Karaoke Hole.
Doña’s events page dates its first night in what it calls its “new Dalston home” to Friday 2 October. Its Friday salsa night runs from 7.30pm to 2am, with free entry before 10pm and £5 after.
