Hot Tub Cinema: Winter Warmers

When the weather is so bitterly cold outside, there is only one way to enjoy some nostalgic and Christmas movies, no, not curled up in front of a fire but in a hot tub of course!

Hot Tub Cinema is back this Winter showcasing some classics such as Indiana Jones, Die Hard and Gremlins bring a new viewing experience for watching cult films. Located in a disused Victorian factory, there are a number of cosy tubs, which can be hired as a group or shared with strangers. The crowds are easy-going and friendly and I was fortunate enough to share it with some awesome Aussies (tub 15!), so don’t let the idea of sharing with people you don’t know stop you from attending this unique event. There are two screens so there is no issue of everyone cramming around one side to see the screen better, so everyone can sit back, relax and enjoy the film.

Once in the tub there is no reason to get out (besides using the toilet!) as there are people on hand to take food and drink orders. There is popcorn and hot dogs available, but just remember it’s easier to get dropped popcorn out of a tub than it is a hot dog! There is a selection of drinks on hand with the addition of seasonal mulled wine/cider. This was very tasty but a cold beer was much more needed instead to help cool down a bit. If you’re wondering “won’t my money get wet?” this has already been taken care of as there is a token system in place. You exchange the cash for tokens and are given a wrist pouch to put them in so you don’t have to carry them or worry about putting them on the side.

Due to the nature of the event, don’t expect to be sat in silence watching the film. People were collectively cheering and booing during the film, making it more about the experience than the film itself. Obviously it does help if you like the film in the first place, but I wouldn’t let that stop me from attending future screenings.

After the film has finished, it’s party time! Music videos are put up on the screens, bubbles go on and everyone stands up and has a dance (twerking to Baby got Back) and a sing-a-long.

If the thought of watching a film in a hot tub doesn’t get you going, then you may want to consider the other unique events they are putting on, namely Hot Tub Karaoke (12th Dec) and Hot Tub Speed Dating (11th Dec). With the karaoke, there will be a battle of the tubs, as each group will compete against the next to win prizes. With the speed dating, ladies will be sat nice and warm in their tubs as the men move from one to the other meeting, chatting and finding the one half-naked in a hut tub? Well, it would definitely be a crazy story to tell the grandchildren if you met someone here!
