G: Tell us about the project?
D15 is a celebration of the history of Defected Records and the role the label has played in the past fifteen years of house music. It’s a chance to bring everybody together – artists both old and new as well as fans from all around the world.
Stage one of Defected’s anniversary is the Defected 15 Club Tour: a series of 15 events that aims to bring the best in house music to Defected fans around the globe. In addition to the tour, on 01 May a pop-up store and exhibition space will open in Shoreditch. Rare memorabilia will visually chart the label’s evolution through the last 15 years, while some of the best DJs, producers and artists from the global house music scene will be invited to host a series of events, talks and workshops.
G: What is unique about this project?
This is the first time that fans of the label can come and experience the history of Defected in one place. In addition, we will be launching a brand new clothing range to celebrate the anniversary, several lines of which will be exclusively available from the store.
G: Why do you choose Shoreditch to do this?
Our office is located in Shoreditch, and we feel that it represents the creative, forward-thinking culture of London that is central to Defected Records’ ethos. Shoreditch is out home, so we absolutely wanted this space to be local.
G: Who/what are your favorite Artists/Businesses in the area?
We have artists coming in and out of the Defected office every week, from new artists like Sonny Fodera and Secondcity, to veterans of the scene like Kenny Dope, Lil’ Louis and Kevin Saunderson. We work closely with a digital agency called UDOX based in Hoxton Square (they built our new website which launched last year), and there loads of other creative business like Vice, Soundcloud and DJ Mag that are within a few minutes’ walk of our office. It’s a busy area!
G: What are your favorite places in the area?
We work with a DJ duo and party outfit called Krankbrother who opened a new restaurant, Beagle, in the area last year. It’s incredible! Plenty of business lunches take place there these days. We’re also big fans of Shoreditch House (when they’ll let us in) and have been known to spend a little too much time in the Horse & Groom in the past… mainly because it’s about 5 second walk from our office and is often just a little too tempting.
G: What are your future plans?
To continue championing quality house music, working with talented artists and putting on the best parties around the world.
