Watches of James Bond

Spectre is the latest Bond film and Daniel Craig’s final curtain call. He has given us a magnificent portrayal of the secret agent and many critics credit him for bringing the franchise back to prominence. He has revitalised a number of areas, including his choice of wrist apparel.

This year, Daniel Craig changed things again with a move towards a brand new Omega watch.

Move to the Omega

The Bond Omega watch connection emanates from the 1990s after the Seiko watch run favoured by Roger Moore in earlier Bond films. After we had all endured the cartoonish nonsense of Moore and the dull Dalton era, we were introduced to Pierce Brosnan, a Bond we could all learn to love. He was stylish, elegant, and attention was paid to every aspect of his character by, then, costume designer Lindy Hemming.

It was where we saw the first introduction of the Omega Seamaster Professional – and that is what we see James Bond sporting today.

Daniel Craig represents another Bond, but he has yet to move away from the obsession with Omega.

Is it the Right Watch?

We can already hear the traditionalists collectively groaning the moment they heard an Omega is set to feature in another Bond film.

There are many who believe that the blue-dialled Seamaster introduced by Brosnan was the beginning of the end of a traditional 007. Ian Fleming only ever mentioned Rolex in the books, and thus some fans believe that filmmakers should honour that.

The Evolution of Craig’s Omega

Daniel Craig bore an Omega when he first appeared as 007 in Casino Royale. This was the Seamaster Planet Ocean. It was an indication of a Bond that was more physical, and this watch matched those ultra-masculine characteristics the producers wanted to portray.

It came with a rubber strap, which made it ideal for all those chases through third-world construction sites.

Quantum of Solace saw the same watch, but this time with a steel strap. Fast forward to Skyfall and the Planet Ocean makes another return. This time, it comes with a blue dial and only appears in a few scenes. This watch marks a move towards a sleeker watch, rather than the chunky dive watches of yesteryear.

So What is Bond Wearing Now?

Two Omega watches appearing in the latest Bond film.

The first is the flashier Seamaster Aqua Terra. This comes with a blue face and bright yellow accents. There’s also the coat of arms for Bond on the second hand. This is a watch that represents Bond and we have already seen it in a promotional still.

On the other hand, there’s the Spectre Seamaster. This is the watch we will likely see in the majority of Bond’s action scenes. It’s understated sleek, yet rugged and masculine design looks like the likely apparel of choice for Craig when he’s at his most active.

You will not find any bright colours here. It comes with a vintage luminova hue and simple arrow hands with black ceramic gloss.

Is one a promotional watch and the other the actual watch? Will we see both of them? He’s done it before back in Casino Royale when he brought back Brosnan’s original Omega. There is no reason he can’t do it again!
