Coffee paintings give glimpse of ethereal nature

Using just coffee, antique ledger paper, and just a touch of ink here and there, artist Michael Aaron Williams creates ethereal portraits of humans and nature. The ledger paper comes from a rural Appalachian store and dates back to the 1920’s, 30’s, and 40’s. Williams’ soft brush stroke allow the subjects to develop their own personality and gives glimpse of insight into his Appalachian heritage. “Rather than wholeness necessitating beauty, I portray the human soul as complete despite the fractures,” Williams says of his work, where he largely represents the fleeting delicateness of both human nature and the natural world.
