Hackney Bridge announces two exciting opportunities for local creatives

Independent retail & entertainment space Hackney Bridge has announced two new opportunities for local creatives, which include offering rent free supported space and the chance to design the venue’s community-inspired canalside mural signage on-site.

Rent Free Supported Space for a Local Young Creative

Hackney Bridge has announced the launch of a brand new Supported Space opportunity for one local creative. They will be given a prime retail unit to use as their very own creative maker studio & retail space, which will be completely free of charge for a whole year starting from June, with the opening on 1st July. Rent, utilities and business rates will be fully paid for up to a maximum of £10,000 per annum.

The selected applicant will be given 12 months to use the space as their creative base, offering the perfect place to get their bright idea off the ground. Applicants will need to be local to Hackney Wick or live within one of our four growth boroughs (Hackney, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets or Newham) and will also need to be aged between 18-25 years old in order to be considered for the space.

The selected artist will also need to show their commitment to and involvement in the local community. Hackney Bridge would love to hear ideas about how the artist intends to collaborate with or engage local community groups. This could include, for instance, running workshops in local schools or youth/community centres, developing work with a particular local group, such as the local Trowbridge Senior Citizens Club, or collaborating with a local arts organisation, such as Skaped.

Potential applicants are encouraged to sign up via this this application link. Deadline for applications is 30th May 2022.

The application process will involve meeting a panel of representatives from the Hackney Bridge Steering Group, which is formed of volunteers from the surrounding local area who are committed to the success of the project.

The successful applicant will be informed by early June 2022 and the unit will be handed over shortly thereafter.

Canal Front Mural Brief

A call out has also been put out to the local creative community to submit design proposals for mural signage that bring to life Hackney Bridge’s external walls along the canal front and draw inspiration from the culture, heritage, and individuality that surrounds it.

This will also be a brilliant opportunity to connect the venue to the community in Hackney Wick, celebrate the area, and give newcomers to the project an idea of what the space is all about.

There are three locations on site that applicants will need to design murals for: Hackney Bridge Kitchens, Hackney Bridge Events and The Good Growth Hub. Hackney Bridge envisages the interpretation to come in several forms or a combination of, such as but not exhaustive to – murals, graffiti, illustrations, photography, vinyl installation and designs.

Hackney Bridge Management will make the final selection in consultation with the Hackney Bridge Steering Group.

The deadline for respondents to provide full proposals is 22nd May 2022. Hackney Bridge will review all responses and select artist(s) for appointment in early June 2022.
