Roast, the British restaurant that has overlooked Borough Market for more than 20 years, opened its second site on Wednesday 21 October inside Virgin Hotels London-Shoreditch at 45 Curtain Road.
The 135-cover restaurant takes in a main dining room and bar, an orangery and a chef’s table. It occupies the space in the hotel that previously housed Marcus Samuelsson’s Red Rooster and then Bibo.
“Opening our second restaurant is a hugely exciting milestone for the business,” said Marc Bevan, Roast’s chief executive, when the opening was announced.
What is on the menu
Roast serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner every day. According to RESET Magazine, the menu includes a haggis and pork Scotch egg, Cornish scallop crudo and a 42-day-aged roast beef, with a beef Wellington, grill steaks, a nut roast and veggie burgers.
Daily specials include a steak, ale and bone marrow pie on Mondays and roast suckling pig on Thursdays. Sundays centre on the roasts, and there is a separate halal menu for both the Sunday roast and the main menu.
The restaurant’s own page also lists live music in the evenings and a private dining room.
The room
The London design agency 3Stories styled the space as a Victorian-inspired conservatory, with ironwork and planting that refer to Shoreditch’s horticultural past and to Columbia Road Flower Market.
The Shoreditch branding adds a Harlequin emblem, a reference to the Curtain, the Elizabethan playhouse that gave Curtain Road its name. The hotel also has a hi-fi listening lounge and bar, Hidden Grooves.
